MEDIA RELEASE:

WINNIPEG April 10, 2006 - An annual program designating a portion of Kildonan Park "vehicle free" on Sunday evenings will begin on April 16, 2006.

Each Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until park closing at 10:00 p.m., Peguis Drive, the portion of roadway that services the northern section of the park, will be closed to all motor vehicles. Vehicles will be required to loop back toward the park entrance via Lord Selkirk Drive.

The program, designed to give walkers, joggers, cyclists, and in-line skaters an opportunity to enjoy a portion of the park free of motorized vehicles, will run until September 3, 2006.

Staff will be on hand at key locations on the roadway to ensure compliance and to deal with special circumstances that may arise. Group users, such as sporting teams that normally access the north area of the park may use the Rainbow Stage parking lot, and walk to their normal activity sites.

Don Budinsky, Manager of Parks & Open Space, says “Sunday evenings are busy times in the park in terms of motor vehicles and pedestrian users – particularly the period from spring to early summer. This program is an attempt to provide a more enjoyable experience for different user groups in separate areas of the park.”
