WINNIPEG December 15, 2005 - Crews worked throughout the night salting and truck-plowing curb lanes on Priority I (Regional) Streets and truck-plowing Priority II (Collector) Streets as light snow continued to fall in the city.
With temperatures predicted to fall throughout the day, use of salt will be less effective. Truck plowing of Priority I streets will commence at 7:00 p.m. this evening and extend to re-plowing of Priority II streets tomorrow morning.
“Additional snowfall predictions for today and tomorrow vary from 2-5 cm. from two forecasting agencies to Environment Canada’s prediction of 12-24 cm.” said Bruce McPhail, Manager of Streets Maintenance.
“If we get the higher snow accumulations, we’ll shift gears and move into an all-out plowing operation involving graders and front-end loaders.” says McPhail.
He says other cleanup activities currently planned include ongoing plowing of Priority I and II sidewalks, and plowing of Priority III walks beginning next Monday. Special emphasis will be given to areas adjacent to houses of worship as the holiday season approaches.
Back lane plowing will commence Sunday or Monday depending on snowfall.
A decision regarding plowing of Priority III (Residential) Streets will be made based on total snowfall and related driving conditions. Plowing, if required, would not start before Monday.
Cost of currently planned activities is estimated at $1 million.
As of noon today, Garbage and Recycling collection is on schedule. Citizens are encouraged to not put garbage cans and bags on top of snow banks and to clear a path for collectors so they can reach your garbage/recyclables.
Effective 11:00 a.m. today, Transit is experiencing a small city-wide delay given snowfall.
