WINNIPEG November 16, 2005 - The Major Snowfall Parking Ban will remain in effect for at least one more night as crews continue to clean up after the season's first snowfall that dumped almost 35 cm. of snow on the city. The parking ban prohibits parking on all Snow Routes between midnight and 6 am. Vehicles parked on Snow Routes during the prohibited times are subject to being ticketed and towed at the owners expense.

Overnight, crews focused efforts on Priority I (Regional) Streets and have completed 50% of these major routes, with the balance to be plowed tonight. Crews will concentrate plowing Priority II (Collector) Streets during the daytime. High traffic volumes preclude clearing of most Regional Streets during the day.

Plowing of Priority III (Residential) Streets is expected to begin on Thursday night, once Priority I and II streets have been cleared. Citizens are advised to monitor local media for an announcement of the Residential Overnight Parking Ban which prohibits parking, between midnight and 6 am, on all streets not designated as Snow Routes.

All categories of sidewalks (Priority I, II and III) are scheduled to be cleared. Progress is being slowed as the heavy snow requires the use of sidewalk blowers as opposed to faster moving plows.

Plowing of back lanes is underway but progressing slowly due to a limited number of front-end loaders.

Bill Larkin, Director of Public Works says, “This was a very heavy snowfall, despite the challenges we’re facing we expect the cleanup to be completed by next Monday, with the exception of some residential sidewalk plowing and snow-hauling.”
