WINNIPEG - October 25, 2005 - Sick and tired of seeing Winnipeg’s national and international reputation threatened by the title “Murder Capital of Canada”, Mayor Sam Katz joined Police Chief Jack Ewatski today to announce the formation of a special police unit to carry out Operation Clean Sweep to tackle the street-level violence and criminals that threaten our citizens.
“It is time to take back our streets. We have the police force, and they have the intelligence on the criminals,” said Katz. “The police know who they are, what they do and where they operate. We don’t need an ivory tower policy discussion. We need to start cracking down, and this Operation is a major step in the right direction.”
“Clean Sweep” will be carried out by a special police unit comprised of more than 40 officers to provide an unprecedented police presence in areas of greatest criminal activity in Winnipeg. This will be in addition to existing police shifts, which will not change. It will operate in areas of greatest need as determined by police commanders. Operations will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and will bring together input from all city departments with resources who can support it.
“Public safety is our number one concern, and that’s why we are taking our enforcement efforts to another level,” said Chief Jack Ewatski. “Not only is this an unprecedented manpower commitment, but it also brings together all our crime fighting resources to collaborate with other agencies and the community to make a safe Winnipeg.”
The operation will commence in November, and results and performance will be reviewed to gauge effectiveness following a first-phase implementation period.
