WINNIPEG - October 14, 2005 - The Maryland Street portion of the Maryland Twin Bridges will re-open to traffic on Monday, October 17 at 06:00 a.m.

Crews will work over the weekend decommissioning traffic detours including barricades, signage and concrete diversion islands, and re-installation of traffic signals the intersections on Wolseley Avenue at Sherbrook Street and Wolseley at Maryland Street.

This marks completion of the first phase of the twin bridges rehabilitation project that began in spring 2005. Work included removal and replacement of the top half of the concrete bridge deck, installation of new and wider sidewalks, new safety barriers to separate vehicles and pedestrians, as well as new handrails and upgraded road lighting.

Bill Larkin, Director of Public Works says, “From the perspective of the bridge rehabilitation itself and the associated traffic detours, the project went perfectly.”

Work on the first phase began in spring of this year.

The final phase of the project, rehabilitating the Sherbrook Street portion of the bridge in a similar manner to the Maryland portion, is scheduled to begin next spring, with completion in fall 2006.

Total project budget (both phases) is $8.7 million.
