WINNIPEG - October 14, 2005 - Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz and Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes have signed an Economic Opportunity Partnership that will promote economic development and increase trade on the mid-continent trade and transportation corridor.
“Sister cities are nice, but this is an agreement that will help both communities sustain economic growth and, ultimately, jobs,” said Katz. “Winnipeg and Kansas have so many things in common, but most of all, we both understand that economic strength is essential for prosperity, and thanks to this agreement we can work together to strengthen the private sector in both communities.”
"The reality is that Canada and the U.S. are the two strongest trading partners, and Winnipeg and Kansas City stand much to gain-working together strategically- in the middle of these two huge markets," said Barnes. "This agreement is not an enterprise of governments, but, rather an enterprise for entrepreneurs."
The Economic Opportunity Partnership sets out several benchmarks for business cooperation between the two cities, and will see Kansas and Winnipeg exchange information on international business development and economic issues, facilitate co-operation between top economic officials and establish reciprocal trade missions each year involving top political, business and economic development stakeholders.
