WINNIPEG - October 7, 2005 - The tenders have closed and Winnipeg property taxpayers will save $2.7 million every year thanks to council's decision to contract out garbage collection in the south end of Winnipeg and AutoBin collection through the entire city.

“These will be real savings for Winnipeg taxpayers,” said Katz. “I hope every councillor takes a look at these numbers and realizes this plan will help us find money for other priority areas without increasing taxes.”

The contract costs are $2.7 million less per year than what it would cost to collect the garbage using City employees and equipment. This is another clear demonstration that contracting out is the most cost-effective method of delivering garbage collection services to our residents. This reduces the cost of collection by $34.57 per household each year in the areas served by these contracts – almost half the cost of past practice.

“Residents can expect to see the same high quality of service they are accustomed to – the transition from City forces to contracted forces will be seamless,” said Public Works Chair Jae Eadie (St. James – Brooklands). “This move will provide great service for residents and real savings for the bottom line.”

If the contracts are approved by City Council, BFI Canada, the successful bidder, will begin providing garbage collection service in March 2006. The contracts provide for garbage collection service from about 5,270 AutoBins in the central area of the city, and about 65,000 residential locations in the south area of the city.

The reports for the award of contracts for garbage collection in areas currently served by City forces will be considered at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works on October 11, 2005.
