WINNIPEG - August 19, 2005 - The main elevator building and smoke stack on the former Ogilvie Mills site at 49 Higgins Avenue between Annabella and Mordaunt Streets, will be demolished by implosion on Sunday morning, August 21, 2005. Details are as follows:

The blast area will be secured, and no unauthorized persons will be allowed within a 300-metre (1000-foot) radius of the blast site.

Traffic in the area, including transit service, will be temporarily rerouted between approximately 6:00 am and 10:00 am on Sunday morning.

  • Higgins Avenue will be closed between Waterfront Drive and the north end of the Louise Bridge at Nairn Avenue.
  • Access to Sutherland Avenue will be closed to traffic between the Disraeli Freeway and Higgins Avenue.

Winnipeg Police will also close the Disraeli Freeway to vehicular traffic for a short period prior to and immediately following the blast to avoid conflict with any pedestrians who may be trying to view the implosion from the bridge. The Freeway will reopen as soon as the demolition Contractor gives the all clear and any excessive pedestrian traffic has abated.

A portion of the blast zone encompasses the Red River, north of Whittier Park – the Police Services River Patrol Unit will close that portion of the river to boat traffic for a short period prior to and immediately following the blast. The waterway will reopen as soon as the Contractor gives the all clear.

Those in the vicinity of the former Ogilivie Mills site may notice a loud bang similar to thunder when the implosion occurs. Sirens will sound in short bursts (5-10 seconds) in the minutes preceding the implosion.

The City will post a video link of the implosion on the City Web site at winnipeg.ca as soon as it is available.
