WINNIPEG - August 18, 2005, 10:00 a.m. - Based on Provincial West Nile virus surveillance data and current environmental conditions, fogging operations for West Nile virus are postponed until further notice.
The Public Health Order remains in effect for the City of Winnipeg . Provincial surveillance data and environmental conditions continue to be monitored for the remainder of the season. Should the risk to human health increase and environmental conditions become conducive, fogging may again be considered. The public will be given advance notice should fogging be required.
The City of Winnipeg will continue its larviciding and barrier treatment programs.
Citizens are reminded to take personal protection measures by:
- Reducing the time you spend outdoors between dusk and dawn. The peak mosquito hours are around dusk and dawn, but Culex mosquitoes will also bite during the night.
- Wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops and long pants when outside, especially between dusk and dawn.
- Applying insect repellent containing DEET, according to Health Canada Guidelines. (DEET is not recommended for children under the age of 6 months).
- Checking that door and window screens fit tightly and are free of holes.
