“Our crews are working full-time to alleviate any safety concerns right now,” said Dave Domke, City Forester. “The pickup of piles and debris will now take longer than originally expected. We recognize the inconvenience these piles make for property owners. We’re asking for the public’s patience while this work is undertaken.”
The City estimates over 10,000 trees have been damaged over the past four weeks with additional damage occurring from storms since the major storm on July 17th. This has resulted in crews having to revisit areas. Assistance is being provided by additional Public Works crews. Providing the City does not experience another major storm, we expect completion of full pickup within the next eight to twelve weeks.
Because of recurring damage, citizens are asked to advise of new damage by contacting the Public Works Call Centre at 311 to report the new location.
Urban Forestry Branch estimates that approximately 800 trees were severely damaged during the summer storms. Removal of these trees will commence once all safety concerns have been addressed. It is expected that this work could go into the winter months before the work is completed.
Citizens are also advised not to remove firewood from the debris piles for firewood because of the threat of the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.
