Council votes to save the taxpayers millions on solid waste
Plan will free money to meet Winnipeg’s priorities

WINNIPEG - JULY 27, 2005 - Faced with a choice between saving millions or further delays on an issue that has waited through three reports and six years for a decision, Mayor Sam Katz and Winnipeg City Council voted today to contract out solid waste collection for the south end of the city and autobin collection for the entire city.

"This was a vote about priorities, and about leadership," said Katz. "It’s easy to spend money, but hard to save it. I want to thank those councillors who supported this motion today for recognizing the difficult financial realities this city is facing. We have to find ways to save money while preserving service."

The motion passed council by a vote 9 for versus 7 against.

"Frankly, I think it’s too bad the vote was as close as it was, especially when you consider the 2005 operating budget, which froze property taxes, passed by a margin of 12-1."

The administration now has council direction to proceed with the plan, which will be phased in over the next year.
