Sandbag dikes no longer required

WINNIPEG - JULY 22, 2005 - With the Red River down below 16 feet, and river levels predicted to drop steadily over the next few weeks, homeowners who constructed sandbag dikes on their properties can now take them down and move the sandbags for pick up.

"The risk of flooding from high river levels is now reduced," says Bill Borlase, Manager of Wastewater Services. "City crews delivered 38,000 sandbags over the July long weekend to help homeowners protect their property from high river levels caused by recent storms. Now that the sandbags are no longer required, we’re arranging to pick them up."

Residents of Scotia Street should place their sandbags in the curb "parking" lane of the street, if space is available. All other locations should place their sandbags as close to the front street as possible. For traffic safety reasons, don’t place them on the street. City equipment will pick up sandbags until Aug 3.

The City has an additional 25,000 bags available in the event rising river levels or isolated overland flooding occurs from additional heavy rainfall.

For information or questions about sandbag and dike removal, please call the Public Works Customer Service Centre at 311 during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After business hours and on weekends, please call 311.
