EPC endorses plan to save millions on solid waste
Annual savings for city taxpayers cannot be ignored
WINNIPEG - JULY 20, 2005 - Committed to protecting the interests of city taxpayers, Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz and the members of the Executive Policy Committee (EPC) voted today to recommend to council plans to contract out the collection of solid waste in south Winnipeg and autobin collection throughout the entire city.
“The people of this city have important priorities, and spending upwards of $2.5 million more than we have to every year on waste collection is not one of them,” said Katz. “We have an obligation to the taxpayers of this city to find savings wherever possible while preserving service. This is a perfect opportunity.”
The business plan developed by the city administration indicates savings of $20 million over ten years.
“It’s pretty straightforward – we need to find savings so we can focus on fixing roads and bridges, and this is a prime opportunity right here,” said Councillor Franco Magnifico, Chair of the ASD Committee of Council. “I urge all councillors to support this recommendation, and put the priorities of Winnipeg first. It’s already worked, and worked well, in the north half of the city – let’s take the next step.”
The EPC recommendation on solid waste will proceed to council for consideration on July 27th, 2005.
