Winnipeggers urged not to stock up on firewood

WINNIPEG - JULY 20, 2005 - In the wake of Saturday’s storm that resulted in many downed trees, Winnipeggers are being urged not to take wood from brush piles on city boulevards for personal use because of the possibility of spreading Dutch elm disease.

Martha Barwinsky, the City’s supervisor of urban forestry, said today it is illegal to store elm wood because it serves as a breeding ground for elm bark beetles.

“All of our hard work in preserving our elm population can be cancelled out,” Barwinsky warned, adding that City crews are being kept busy and it may be awhile before the brush piles can be picked up.

She also urged residents not to contribute to the workload of City crews by adding refuse from their own yards to the boulevard piles.

And above all, she reminded homeowners to use common sense and think of safety when dealing with damaged trees on their property. Call a professional if it involves a dangerous situation, she said.
