Mayor to discuss gas tax with Minister Godfrey in Ottawa
Will seek equal treatment for Winnipeg under gas tax sharing deal

OTTAWA - JULY 07, 2005 - Looking to address Winnipeg’s crushing infrastructure deficit, Mayor Sam Katz will meet today with The Hon. John Godfrey, Federal Infrastructure Minister, to explore ways to direct federal gas tax funds towards repairs to crumbling roads and bridges.

“Winnipeg’s priorities are clear – fix the roads, fix the bridges, get it done, period,” said Katz.

Winnipeg’s infrastructure challenges have been well documented, and when the Federal Government announced detailed plans to share gas tax with municipal governments across Canada, opportunities to address infrastructure deficits, including repairing roads and bridges, were identified.

Since that time, federal officials have indicated to the governments of Winnipeg and Manitoba that the City would be prevented from spending the funds to repair crippled infrastructure.

“I know Minister Godfrey wants to see a deal work for everyone,” said Katz. “I am anxious to work with him to find a way for all levels of government to work together and find a real solution to tackling Winnipeg’s infrastructure deficit.”
