Flood control activities
WINNIPEG - June 30, 2005 - Flood control activities in the City of Winnipeg will continue to protect to 21 feet above James Avenue datum. The flow on the river, at the peak, this weekend is expected to match or slightly exceed 1996 levels.
The City is encouraging all homeowners along the riverbanks to undertake the following precautions:
- First - ensure you move or secure anything near the riverbank;
- Second - you need to ensure the area where you will be building your dike is clear of any obstructions.
The City is making sandbags and will be delivering them to assigned properties along with the polywrap on a priority basis. It is the homeowner's responsibility to build the sandbag dike. A City staff person will provide written instructions for building a sandbag dike and remain on site to ensure you and your volunteers get the constructions started properly. Surveyors are currently working to determine the height of dikes.
Given the speed and volume of the water moving through the watershed, it is important to take extra precautions around streams, retention ponds, riverbanks, catchbasins etc. This is a particularly important message for young children. Volunteer assistance to fill and pile sandbags is needed. If you are interested in providing volunteer assistance you can go to Scotia Street between the 200 - 400 block, or the Winnipeg Rowing Club at 20 Lyndale Drive. Further information on high river activities can be found on the City's Emergency Preparedness Program site.
