Information for Property Owners affected by Red River levels of 21.0 ft above James Avenue Datum

WINNIPEG - June 30, 2005 - The Red River is expected to crest on Friday, July 1st. The City of Winnipeg is protecting for levels of 21.0 feet above James Avenue datum. For property owners affected by these river levels here is what is being done, and what you should do to protect your home from potential flooding:

  • If your property is affected by this river elevation you will have been contacted either by telephone, or in person, and advised of this situation
  • First you should ensure that you move or secure anything near the riverbank.
  • Second you need to ensure the area where you will be building your dike is clear of any obstructions.
  • The City is making sandbags and will be delivering them to your property along with the required poly wrap on a priority basis. You will be approached to sign a release confirming that you accept the sandbags.
  • Please contact 311 for information on delivery to your property.
  • It is your responsibility to build your sandbag dike. The City will also be making a call for volunteers through the media. Listen to Winnipeg radio stations for updates on volunteers.
  • A City staff person will provide written instructions for building a sandbag dike and remain on site to ensure that you and your volunteers get the construction started properly. Surveyors are being dispatched to determine the height of dikes.
  • You will not be charged for the bags or the assistance.
  • For residents of Scotia Drive (200-400 block) – city staff are delivering bulk sand and bags for residents at these locations to get a start on making bags.
