Mayor Katz to host first Winnipeg City Summit
Conference will bring together key community leaders, shape path for future growth

WINNIPEG - June 30, 2005 - Committed to incorporating the strength and vision of key community leaders into his agenda to build a ‘City of Opportunity’, Mayor Sam Katz today announced plans to host the first ever Winnipeg City Summit, and named Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, Ida Albo, and Leonard Asper as co-chairs for the event.

“I have said many times that I envision Winnipeg as a ‘City of Opportunity’, a fun, safe and exciting place to live and work, built on a foundation of strong economic growth” said Katz. “The Winnipeg City Summit will provide a forum for the leaders of our community to bring their own perspectives and ideas to the table so this vision will be even stronger.”

The Winnipeg City Summit will take place May 3 and 4, 2006. The co-chairs will assist in the creation and steering of its agenda, and some 200 delegates will be invited to attend. Topics will cover a wide range of policy areas that can be developed using a strong economy as a foundation, including the retention of young people, the creation of vibrant and sustainable neighbourhoods, and increasing the participation of citizens in municipal affairs.

“Leonard Asper, Lloyd Axworthy and Ida Albo are widely recognized in Winnipeg as key community leaders, and I am very excited they have agreed to participate,” said Katz. “I look forward to working with them to develop an event that will show Winnipeg and the world that our city is turning a corner by focusing on our opportunities and our future.”

Conference coordinators are planning a series of events leading up to the Summit to ensure the public has a chance to shape the agenda of the conference. Keynote speakers and detailed event agendas will be announced in the fall of 2005. More information on the Summit can be found at citysummit2006.winnipeg.ca.
