Mayor Katz celebrates National Aboriginal Day
Ceremony at The Forks marks prominence of Aboriginals in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG - JUNE 21, 2005 - Recognizing that the Aboriginal community is a major asset to Winnipeg’s rich cultural heritage, Mayor Sam Katz today celebrated National Aboriginal Day in Canada during a ceremony at The Forks.

“Aboriginal people are one of Winnipeg’s biggest assets,” said Katz. “As Mayor, I am very proud to celebrate the role of our Aboriginal population in our past as well as its future

The City of Winnipeg has formally adopted the 2005 Municipal Aboriginal Pathways (MAPS) strategy, and in 2005 budget provided more than $500,000 in additional funds to support these strategies.

Mayor Katz also signed a memorandum of understanding with both the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as well as the Manitoba Metis Federation committing the City of Winnipeg to finding new opportunities to employ Aboriginal people.

“A meaningful strategy for Aboriginal people in Winnipeg is essential to the future success of Winnipeg,” said Katz. “Today, I hope all people in Winnipeg take a moment to reflect on the value and potential our Aboriginal community represents for this great city.”
