Mayor Katz first year full of action
Foundation established for City of Opportunity
WINNIPEG - JUNE 20, 2005 - Nearly a year after the people of Winnipeg endorsed his vision for a new approach to City Hall, Mayor Sam Katz today highlighted his major accomplishments including election commitments since taking office.
“We have made some great progress on my commitments to make this a better city,” said Katz. “We have been building a foundation for Winnipeg to be known once again as a ‘City of Opportunity’, setting an agenda at City Hall that gets the basics right.”
Key first year achievements for Katz include:
- bringing in a budget that freezes property taxes,
- cutting downtown business taxes by 20%
- cutting prices for seniors bus tickets and passes by 50%
- successful redirection of $43 million towards community and recreation facilities
- introduced a comprehensive new strategy to combat mosquitoes
- introduced a bylaw to crack down on aggressive panhandling
“I don’t have time to look back, as there is much work left to do. We have a new bylaw to tackle aggressive panhandling before Council, and I am looking forward to receiving the recommendations of the Red Tape Commission,” said Katz. “As I prepare to launch my agenda for my second year in office, I will continue to focus on creating an exciting city where everyone has a chance to succeed, and have a great future in Winnipeg.”
