City again urges residents to protect their homes from basement flooding
Canada Post Now Delivering Brochure

WINNIPEG - May 31, 2005 - Beginning this week, Canada Post will be delivering the City of Winnipeg’s brochure, Protect Your Home from Basement Flooding. Mailed annually, the brochure contains valuable information on steps homeowners can take to protect their home from basement flooding.

Bill Watters, Senior Project Engineer, says, “No matter where you live in Winnipeg, your home can be at risk of basement flooding. Heavy rainstorms that fall over short periods of time can overwhelm any city sewer system. Overloaded sewers can back up through house sewer lines and flow into basements that aren’t protected.”

To protect your home from basement flooding, take the following steps:

  • Install a backwater valve and sump pit drainage system
  • Check and maintain your backwater valve and sump pit drainage system regularly
  • Improve drainage around your house

The brochure, also available on the City’s Web site at winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/pdfs/drainage/basementFloodProtection.pdf provides more information on each of these protective measures.

For more information on the Basement Flooding Protection Program, or for a handout on the care and maintenance of sump pump drainage systems, residents can call 311. For information on installing backwater valves and sump pits, residents can call the Planning, Property and Development Department at 311, or visit winnipeg.ca/ppd/brochures.stm
