| Mayor delivers on mosquito election promise 3-year plan to control bugs, address environmental concerns WINNIPEG - MARCH 11, 2005 - Committed to improving the quality of life for all Winnipeggers, Mayor Sam Katz today revealed a comprehensive new three-year plan to battle mosquitoes which will fulfill a major election commitment. “Mosquitoes are an unacceptable nuisance during our wonderful summers,” said Katz. “During the election, I outlined a new approach to mosquito control that will take both our environment and our quality of life into account. This plan is based on both of those pillars, and sets the stage for a new approach to mosquitoes in Winnipeg.” Beginning in 2005, ground crews will use Methoprene® and other biologically based products to treat all larval development sites within Winnipeg. Within Winnipeg and the Capital Region, some specific aerial applications will also be piloted using Methoprene®. The phased in approach will continue in 2006 by moving towards more aerial sites being treated with Methoprene® and other long term biological controls. In 2007, the final phase will make the City’s Insect Control Larviciding Program fully biological. “While I still support fogging if conditions mandate it, this approach is better for the environment, and better for our quality of life,” said Katz. “I encourage my colleagues on council to support it in time for deployment this spring. It’s a major step in the right direction.” Phase One of this approach will be accomplished within the existing Insect Control budget. In 2006, Phase 2 will require a $1.5M increase a further $1.45M will be required in 2007 to complete the final phase of the biological-based Larviciding Program.
