Recycling and Garbage Collection may be delayed due to heavy snowfall

WINNIPEG - JANUARY 04, 2005 - Today is Day 3 on the garbage and recycling collection calendar. Staff are collecting garbage and recyclables from Day 3 homes, as well as servicing as many as possible of those homes missed on Day 2 (Friday, December 31). Due to the snow clearing efforts, residents of Day 2 homes that can’t be serviced by the end of the day today should take their garbage and recyclable materials back in and place them out for their next regularly scheduled collection day (Monday, January 10).

Collection Days 3, 4, 5, and 1 may be delayed this week due to the heavy snowfall. Residents on these collection days are encouraged to leave both their garbage and recycling materials out.

For apartment and commercial locations with garbage and recycling service, please remove the snow from around the containers and ensure there are no vehicles parked in front of the containers. Collection is behind schedule in some areas but we expect to be back on the regular schedule by the end of the week.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Put their garbage and recycling materials out on their regular collection day prior to 7:00 a.m.
  • Leave some space between recyclables and garbage - i.e., garbage containers at one side of the driveway, and blue boxes at the other. This helps both the recycling and garbage operators identify what they should collect.
  • Avoid putting garbage bags/containers and blue boxes on top of snow banks.
  • Clear a path so that collectors can see and get to the garbage and blue boxes.
