Katz welcomes new City Entomologist “We must do everything possible to rid our city of mosquitoes. They affect our quality of life, and can pose a serious health risk,” said Katz. “The pursuit of safe and efficient methods to eliminate mosquitoes was a major priority during my election campaign, and I know it is a major priority for city councillors. Taz brings valuable experience and knowledge which will help our city fight mosquitoes, and I look forward to sharing some ideas with him.” Katz will ask Stuart to explore the use of methoprene briquettes, a technique used in American cities such as Boston and New York City. Methoprene is administered in standing water and gradually releases a chemical that prevents the reproduction and maturity of mosquitoes. The briquettes may allow larviciding efforts to endure through extended period of rainfall in wet summers. “By examining alternative effective measures, I believe that by taking a proactive approach and working with city council, we can find new long term solutions to the city’s mosquito problem,” said Katz. “Safe and effective mosquito control will require many different measures, and I am confident Taz will be a tremendous asset to city council as we develop new policies to eliminate mosquitoes without resorting to fogging.” Katz will work with city council to see that methoprene is explored together with other measures as the city explores the viability and efficiency of fogging with malathion. |
