Taz Stuart appointed as new entomologist for the City of Winnipeg’s Insect Control branch

WINNIPEG - July 20, 2004 - The City of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Taz Stuart as the Entomologist for the Community Services Department’s Insect Control Branch. Mr. Stuart’s appointment comes after an international recruitment conducted by the City.

Mr. Stuart joins the City of Winnipeg after 12 years with the City of Regina, most recently as the Entomologist for the Integrated Pest Management Section. He has a Masters of Science Degree, and is a professional biologist with a specific focus in the field of Entomology. He will bring valuable knowledge and experience regarding integrated mosquito control strategies from another Canadian prairie province that experiences many environmental conditions and mosquito control challenges similar to Winnipeg. In addition, his unique expertise in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for effective decision making and planning control strategies will be a valuable asset.

As the co-chairperson of the Saskatchewan West Nile Virus Entomological Committee and as an active participant in a range of professional organizations and committees, Mr. Stuart will provide the City with strong professional linkages upon which to build sound pest management strategies and valuable working partnerships with other organizations, levels of government, and the research community.

Mr. Stuart will be a key member of the Administrative Team within the Insect Control Branch, providing scientific knowledge and expertise in the ongoing development of leading-edge insect control strategies for Winnipeg, with a strong emphasis on the integration of contemporary ecological approaches.

Mr. Stuart will assume his new role as the Entomologist on September 7, 2004.
