North phase of Main Street reconstruction begins

WINNIPEG - July 09, 2004 - The north phase (William Ave. to Alexander Ave.) of the Main Street Reconstruction Project will begin on Monday, July 12. Beginning Sunday, July 11 traffic will be diverted, just north of Alexander, onto the east side of Main Street, which will handle two-way traffic (two lanes in each direction) between Alexander and William.

Turns from Main will be prohibited at Rupert Ave. and Market Ave. and Pacific Ave will be closed at Main but can be accessed from King St. William will be closed between Main and King.

The right curb lane on King between Bannatyne and William and the left curb lane on Bannatyne between King and Arthur will be closed July 12th to 27th , except during rush hours, to accommodate Fringe Festival activities.

Southbound traffic will divert back through the median at William Avenue onto the newly reconstructed portion of Main from Bannatyne to Lombard. Median and curb lanes on this stretch of Main will remain closed until late July to allow work on the center median and streetscaping to proceed. This work should be complete in late July.

“We’re very pleased with how work on the south phase of project has progressed.” says Bill Larkin, director of Public Works. “Traffic disruptions have been much better than expected and easy access to Exchange businesses has been maintained. Despite rainy weather the project’s right on schedule and we’re confident the north phase will go as well.”

Larkin says completion of the $4.5 million project is scheduled for mid September.
