Kildonan Park roadway restrictions extended

WINNIPEG - June 30, 2004 - A pilot program designating a portion of Kildonan Park “vehicle free” on Sunday evenings, has proven successful and will be extended until the end of October.

The program involves closing the portion of Peguis Drive, the roadway servicing the northern section of the park, to all motor vehicles, from 6:00 p.m. until park closing at 10:00 p.m. Vehicles traveling in the park will be required to loop back toward the park entrance via Lord Selkirk Drive.

The program is designed to give walkers, joggers, cylists and in-line skaters an opportunity to enjoy a portion of the park free of motorized vehicles.

Staff will be on hand at key locations on the roadway to ensure compliance and to deal with special circumstances that may arise. Group users, such as sporting teams that normally access the north area of the park may use the Rainbow Stage parking lot, and walk to their normal activity sites.

Don Budinsky, Manager of Parks & Open Spaces, says “Sunday evenings are a busy time in the park in terms of motor vehicles and pedestrian users. The program provides a more enjoyable experience for different user groups in separate areas of the park.”
