City Hall half-masts flags to honour Holocaust Memorial Day

WINNIPEG - April 16, 2004 - Flags will fly at half-mast at City Hall on Monday, April 19, to honour Holocaust Memorial Day, known as Yom Hashoah.

"This year's remembrance is particularly significant for me as I had the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Memorials at Yad Vashem in Israel last fall," said Mayor Glen Murray.

"The stories and experiences of the human tragedy that occurred so recently in our history - and in particular the Children's Memorial -- emphasized for me the importance of always remembering the horror of six million lives lost in order to ensure it never happens again. We must also remember the heroes and celebrate their bravery and courage in the face of unspeakable terror."

Holocaust Awareness Week takes place this year from April 18 to 23, 2004.

Due to prior commitments, Mayor Murray is unable to attend the Public Memorial Service at the Manitoba Legislature Building on Monday at noon and will be represented by Acting Deputy Mayor Mike Pagtakhan.
