Provencher Bridges - Project Update

WINNIPEG - October 17, 2003 - Project Update

Vehicular Bridge:

Work continues on the vehicular bridge towards completion scheduled for the end of October. The sidewalk on the north side of the bridge was opened to pedestrians this morning. The temporary sidewalk on the south side will remain open for approximately another week until installation of traffic control signals, on Water Avenue east of Waterfront Drive, is completed. These signals will allow pedestrians to safely cross Water Ave.

Also beginning today, eastbound vehicles on the bridge will be prohibited from turning right onto Tache Avenue while pavement works including a permanent traffic island and asphalt resurfacing are underway. This prohibition will be in place for approximately
10 days.

Other work on the vehicular bridge including completion of the center median at the east end is not expected to impact traffic.

Pedestrian Bridge:

Work on Winnipeg’s newest landmark, the dramatic cable-stayed ped bridge, inches closer to completion. The patterned concrete deck is almost complete and workers continue to install handrails and lighting prior to opening the bridge to foot traffic around the second week in November. Work on the building on the bridge’s centre plaza will continue throughout the winter, with occupancy by a restaurateur anticipated for spring 2004.
