City Mourns Duhamel's Passing

WINNIPEG - OCTOBER 1, 2002 -  Mayor Glen Murray, on behalf of his colleagues on City Council and all Winnipeggers, today issued the following statement:

“Senator Ron Duhamel was an extraordinary leader, a very gentle spirit, and a man of true honour. He had the real ability to build consensus and his leadership laid the foundation for a high level of cooperation between the three levels of government.

Ron Duhamel leaves us a tangible legacy, much of which is currently under construction, including the new architecturally exciting Provencher Bridge, Waterfront Drive, the St. Boniface Clinical Trial Research Centre and a bilingual Service Centre to better meet the needs of citizens. Through his work in Ottawa, he has raised the profile of francophones in Western Canada. His passing is a great loss for all Manitobans, and our deepest sympathy is extended today to his wife Carolyn, and their children.”

The City of Winnipeg flags have been lowered to half-mast to honour Senator Duhamel.
