Recycling Program for Community Centres and Recreation Facilities Begins TodayWINNIPEG - December 17, 2001 – Today marks the first day of collection for the City of Winnipeg’s new recycling program for community centres and recreation facilities. Major City recreation facilities along with 71 community centres are now eligible for recycling services. Mayor Glen Murray says, “City Council is dedicated to ensuring residents have the opportunity to recycle both at home and in the community. This is another step in making recycling a way of life in Winnipeg.”
Recycling bins were delivered last week to 46 community centre sites and 17 City recreation facilities, such as Pan Am Pool, Sargent Park Recreation Complex and St. James Civic Centre. Similar to the apartment recycling program, three types of materials can be recycled – paper products, containers and glass. The program is funded by the Manitoba Product Stewardship Corporation, the City of Winnipeg and the sale of recyclable materials.
Marlene Amell, Executive Director with General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres says, “We are pleased that community centres have the opportunity to participate in the City of Winnipeg’s recycling program. Those Centres who participate will also benefit by reducing their garbage collection costs.”
Councillor John Angus, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, says, “We hope to recover more than 200 tonnes of recyclables each year from community recreation sites. This will add to the 28,000 tonnes of material we collect through the existing residential recycling programs and the 4,500 tonnes we expect to collect from the new Apartment Recycling Program.”
