Mayor Bets on Bomber VictoryWINNIPEG - November 20, 2001 – Mayor Glen Murray, on behalf of all citizens of Winnipeg, is warning Calgary’s Mayor Dave Bronconnier to be prepared to eat humble pie.
“I am absolutely confident the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are unstoppable this year as they ‘stampede’ their way across East and West,” said Mayor Murray. “I am so sure they will bring home the Grey Cup that I have promised to fly the Calgary flag on Monday at City Hall and wear a Stamps jersey to our December 12th Council meeting IF….I refuse to finish this sentence. The likely scenario is that Winnipeg’s flag will fly over Calgary on Monday and Mayor Bronconnier will be wearing Blue and Gold to his next Council meeting on December 3rd. ”
“I would like to add that Winnipeggers are delighted to go head to head with Calgary, a City that enjoys healthy competition,” said Mayor Murray. “Calgarians have a great sense of sportsmanship and like us, they know how to party,” said Mayor Murray.
The Mayor added that Winnipeg will honour it’s bet with Hamilton Mayor Robert Wade.
In the four games played this past weekend, Winnipeg won two (Bison’s/Bombers) and Hamilton won two (Bulldogs) – a draw which means each city will donate seasons tickets to charity in January.
“Hamilton athletes and fans should be proud of their remarkable performance and I know Winnipeggers join me in thanking them for allowing us to host three such talented teams in one weekend,” said Mayor Murray.
Mayor Murray will travel to the Grey Cup game in Montreal on Friday, and promises the City of Winnipeg intends to celebrate the Bombers outstanding season … details to follow Wednesday.
