Mayors of Hamilton, Winnipeg Issue Challenges On and Off the Athletic Fields in this Weekend's Contests

HAMILTON (Ontario) – NOVEMBER 14, 2001 - The gloves are off, the red flags are down and the Mayors of Hamilton and Winnipeg are ready for a fight to the finish. With the cities competing against each other in four athletic contests this weekend, Hamilton Mayor Robert E. Wade and Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray have declared their interests and made their wager. The bet: The Mayor of the city whose teams lose three of the four events will buy season tickets for all three teams in the winning city and hand the tickets over to the winning Mayor for distribution to local charities.

The exciting weekend schedule starts with the Hamilton Bulldogs meeting the Manitoba Moose at the Winnipeg Arena Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, November 17, the McMaster Marauders tangle with the Manitoba Bisons in the Churchill Bowl and on Sunday, November 18, the Tiger Cats vie with the Blue Bombers in the CFL Eastern Final.

“Look, all I can tell you is that we’re not known as Steel Town for nothing. We’re strong, we’re smooth and we’re experienced,” said Mayor Bob “Tough Guy” Wade. “I’ll be watching the games and can’t wait to hand out tickets to next year’s games to United Way agencies, courtesy of Mayor Murray.”

Mayor Glen “Hard-as-Ice” Murray poo-poo’ed Mayor Wade for his posturing, “Come on, Tough Guy, you know that we’re famous for our tenacity, our panache and our mosquitoes. We’re gonna wipe the floor with Hamilton.”

The two Mayors sealed the wager over a long-distance call today. The Mayors were cheered by players from the six teams that will hit the turf and ice this weekend.
