Mayor Welcomes Hamilton Invasion

WINNIPEG - NOVEMBER 14, 2001 - Mayor Glen Murray, on behalf of all citizens of Winnipeg, is challenging Hamilton Mayor Robert Wade to a friendly wager as three sports teams go head to head in four games this weekend in an unprecedented display of city rivalry.

The Manitoba Moose play two games against Hamilton's Bulldogs (on Friday and Saturday); on Saturday McMaster University and the University of Manitoba send their best onto the field in an exciting semi-final football match between the Bisons and the Marauders; and on Sunday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL Eastern Final.

Mayor Murray and Mayor Wade have agreed to a "three out of four" wager.

Whichever city loses three out of four games this weekend will buy season tickets to the opposing CFL and college football and hockey games next season for donation to the Mayor's organization of choice.

"It's a good thing Hamilton has the CFL Hall of Fame because they'll need it as the consolation prize for not winning the Eastern Final this weekend," said Mayor Murray. "Seriously, Hamilton and Winnipeg have a lot in common as cities on the rebound with down-to-earth, hard working folks who love their sports teams with a passion. We share great hockey and football teams and we are honoured to be hosting this calibre of athletes and their fans this weekend. 1 feel badly breaking the news to them - but the fact is, the Moose, Bisons and of course, the Bombers are going to win this weekend. "

Mayor Murray reached Mayor Wade while travelling to Veracruz, Mexico to speak at an international conference this weekend and will return to Winnipeg on Saturday night.
