Leak in Water Feeder Main May Cause Discoloured Water For Some Winnipeg Residents

WINNIPEG - NOVEMBER 8, 2001 - Yesterday at 6:00 pm, a large leak occurred on a 20” water feeder main between Galt and George Avenues, on the west bank of the Red River. Although the water supply to this main was shut off at 11:15 pm, water service to surrounding residents has not been interrupted.

Tom Pearson, Manager of the City’s Water Services, says, “Some customers in the North End and East Kildonan communities may occasionally experience discoloured water over the next 24 hours.” Because the main has been removed from service, there has been a change in water flow. This change stirs up normally occurring sediment in the mains and causes discoloured water. This sediment will settle down in the next day or so. The discolouration may appear again temporarily next week when the repairs are complete and the feeder main is brought back into service.

“The sediments do not pose a health risk”, adds Pearson. Residents are advised to check for discoloured water before doing laundry and running the dishwasher. If the water is discoloured, delay using these appliances until the water runs clear. This helps the sediment to resettle. Running the water does not help eliminate the discoloured water.

Citizens with questions about water quality can call the Water and Waste Department’s Customer Service Centre at 311.
