Community Leaders to Join Mayors at C5 in Winnipeg - Jane Jacobs to Launch Discussion on Canada's Urban ChallengeWINNIPEG - MAY 22, 2001 - The C5 meeting will be held later this week on May 24th and 25th at the historic Hotel Fort Garry in Winnipeg. Renowned and authoritative thinker on urban life and economies Jane Jacobs, and Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray will host this groundbreaking event jointly. The Mayors of Calgary, Al Duerr, Vancouver, Phil Owen, Montreal, Pierre Bourque, Winnipeg, Glen Murray and Toronto, Mel Lastman will be joined by some of Canada's most respected and influential leaders.
Among those participating will be Vancouver's Ivan L. Head, Professor Emeritus of Law, and Senior Fellow of the Liu Centre for the Study of Global Issues at the University of British Columbia.
Participants also include Winnipeg's Leonard Asper, President and CEO of CanWest Global Communications, Michele Thibodeau DeGuire, President and CEO of Centraide Montréal (United Way), Dr. Roger Gibbins, President of the Canada West Foundation as well as Toronto's Anne Golden, President, United Way of Greater Toronto, and incoming President of The Conference Board of Canada.
A total of 14 individuals, representing a broad range of interests, will be participating in the C5 meeting alongside the mayors of Winnipeg, Montréal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. "We are gathering this week to open the dialogue, to gain further insight on the various and complex needs of Canada's metropolitan regions, to share our common challenges and the potential solutions" said C5 co-host Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray. "We expect each participant, not only politicians, to share their unique perspectives as active leaders in their community," added Mayor Murray.
The media are invited to attend the opening session to be held Thursday May 24th from 20:00hrs to 21:15hr. A closing media conference will be held Friday May 25th at 15:00. All events will take place at the Hotel Fort Garry.
