City Reminds All Homeowners To Take Precautions To Protect Against Basement Flooding

WINNIPEG - MAY 3, 2001 - A temporary rise in river levels of 6 to 12 inches is expected this weekend. Although there will be a gradual drop in levels following the weekend, above normal river levels are expected to remain until early June.

Bill Watters, Project Engineer for the City's Basement Flood Relief Program says, "as we do each year, we are urging all homeowners to take steps to protect their homes from basement flooding." To ensure maximum protection against basement flooding, the City recommends installing a sewer line backup valve and a sump pit with pump in the basement.

High river levels increase the risk of basement flooding across the city. When river levels are high, the normal capacity of the sewer system is reduced. With heavy rains, the sewer system may be overcome at any time, but the risk is greater with high river levels.

"People should check that their sump pump drainage system and their sewer backup valves are functioning properly," says Watters. He adds, "all residents should ensure drainage is directed away from the home by extending downspouts away from their basement walls and ensuring the earth is built up around the house." Also, if proper precautions cannot be taken, homeowners should consider removing valuables from the basement or raising them up off the floor.
