2001 News Releases
Provincial Long Range Flood OutlookWINNIPEG - JANUARY 26, 2001 - Based on the Provincial long range flood outlook issued this afternoon, under the worst weather conditions, 76 properties could be at risk of flooding in the City, 43 of these homes are south of the Floodway.
Because significant fall rainstorms and high December snowfall resulted in higher than normal flood potential, the City advanced normal flood preparations and has been holding planning meetings since mid-December. This potential flood is well within the City’s capabilities.
Under the worst weather conditions, the Provincial forecast indicates that the water level in the City could be 746.6 feet at James Avenue (19.0 feet above City datum). This is 0.3 feet lower than the 1996 peak and 5.5 feet below the 1997 (Flood of the Century) peak. South of the Floodway, however, the forecast is for the water to reach 767.4 feet above sea level, which is approximately three feet above the 1996 peak, and four feet below the 1997 peak.
The next Provincial forecasts (late February and late March) will provide more precise information. The City will then contact all property owners deemed at risk well in advance of any required action. Until that time, the City will continue normal flood preparations.
