Mayor Unveils New Look for City

WINNIPEG - JANUARY 18, 2001 - Mayor Glen Murray today unveiled an energetic new identity for the City of Winnipeg which builds on our core values of generosity, diversity, and entreprenuership both visually and through the positioning line “Embrace the Spirit – “Vivez l’esprit.”

The new brand has a global feel while depicting our unique prairie geography where the rivers meet at the heart of the continent.

The rich palette of colours respects Winnipeg’s distinct Aboriginal heritage while evoking our strong connection to the four seasons and the elements – water, air, fire and earth.

“This new visual metaphor celebrates Winnipeg and the incredible versatility of our citizens,” said Mayor Glen Murray. “During the Pan Am Games we learned how important it can be to represent ourselves in a cohesive way here at home, across the country, and around the world. We are building on that momentum with a comprehensive branding, which includes a new corporate logo, a positioning line, promotional flags, a Web link and snappy promotional video. This updated identity allows us to move forward in a way that reflects the character and energy of our city.”

The new branding will be used by all City of Winnipeg departments on letterhead, business cards and other materials as stock is depleted and replaced. In that way, transitional costs will be minimal. The initial expense of $56,000 for development and production of the new branding has already been absorbed within the existing Corporate Services budget.

Mayor Murray said the official City of Winnipeg Crest or Coat of Arms and the Winnipeg Police Service and Fire Paramedic Service Crests will continue to be used at official ceremonies and on official documents.

“The idea of branding is to create an identity for everyday use,” said Mayor Murray. “I will strongly encourage and support the use of this new look by the private sector as well as agencies such as Tourism Winnipeg, the Convention Centre, and Economic Development Winnipeg.”

The Mayor would like to thank the staff at Deschenes Regnier and Jane Chalmers, Regional Director of CBC Prairie Region, for their assistance.
