The City of Winnipeg is a member of the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). ALGA is a professional organization committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education and training, while upholding the highest standards of professional ethics. There are more than 300 organizational members and over 2,000 individual members of ALGA in Canada and the United States. On an annual basis, ALGA invites report submissions from large, medium and small audit departments. The Knighton Award is the highest award presented by ALGA. The process for selection is conducted by independent audit experts from across North America who evaluate submissions on the basis of the scope and potential for significant impact, persuasiveness of conclusions, focus of the recommendations on efficient and effective government, communication styles and innovation. In additional, reports must adhere to strict standards for performance audits established for the profession. The Audit Department is proud to have been recognized for their work on three separate reports.
2006 City of Winnipeg Audit Department receives "Honourable Mention"
In 2006, the City of Winnipeg Audit Department received an Honourable Mention in the medium Audit shop category for our Report on the Photo Enforcement Program. In selecting the audit report, the ALGA judges stated that the presentation and substance of the audit were impressive. The skillful use of tables, graphs and flowcharts provided an easy to read report. The report was extremely thorough and gave the reader information on: the financial performance of the program, efficiencies and cost effectiveness of the program, effectiveness of the risk management and control processes, and whether the program achieved its goal of improving public safety.
2004 City of Winnipeg Audit Department receives "Special Project Award"
In 2004, the City of Winnipeg Audit Department received the Special Projects Award for our Report on the Integrated Risk Management (IRM) Model. The Special Projects Award represents the best non-audit report by a local government audit agency in Canada and the United States. The judges commented that the IRM model used an innovative and comprehensive approach for assessing and communicating risk factors inherent in the organization. Through incorporation of a City-wide dialogue and an organized process for the measurement of risk, management was able to create risk action plans that assure that managers understand key risk factors and have the tools to manage risk in their particular areas.
2000 City of Winnipeg Audit Department wins "Knighton Award"
The Knighton Award is the highest award presented by ALGA and represents the best audit report for performance auditing by a local government agency in Canada and the United States. The City of Winnipeg was selected as the winner of the Knighton Award in the medium size category. The judges unanimously agreed that the Real Estate Management Audit exemplified remarkable creativeness and foresight and that the report delivered a clear and meaningful message to management and the public. This is the first time that this award has been granted to an audit department in Canada!
