Northwest Winnipeg residents only –
Biweekly curbside spring and fall yard waste collection program

Residents served by the new automated garbage cart program in the northwest area will receive biweekly curbside spring and fall yard waste collection in May and October. Residents will receive a brochure with their collection dates.

Place your yard waste in one of the following acceptable containers and place the container(s) where you normally place your garbage / recycling at your property line. We compost the yard waste into a reusable soil-like material, which we use to landscape finished landfill areas.

Types of acceptable yard waste containers:

  • Any reusable container without a lid (e.g., plastic tubs, metal or plastic garbage cans). Please don’t overfill the containers – keep them light enough so that you can carry them easily to the curb or lane.
  • Cardboard boxes.
  • Paper yard waste bags. They are made from weather-resistant paper, yet break down at the composting site over time. You can buy them at many stores.
  • Clear plastic yard waste bags.
  • Any certified compostable bag with either of the following logos:
BNQ compost logo BPI compost logo

No coloured plastic garbage bags please! They will not be collected.

  • garbage of any kind (including animal waste)

Yard waste collection tips

  • Please note that your yard waste collection dates do not follow the regular garbage and recycling calendar.
  • Put your yard waste containers out by 7:00 a.m. only on the dates you have been provided for your yard waste collection.
  • Leave some space between your yard waste containers and your garbage cart.
  • Yard waste that is set out in coloured plastic garbage bags is considered garbage and will not be collected
  • Mulching the leaves will take up less space in your yard waste container.
  • Try grasscycling! Just let your grass clippings fall! Clippings, also called mulch, return nutrients to the soil and make your lawn healthy and green. Every time you throw away one bag of grass clippings, you are throwing away about 1/4 pound of lawn fertilizer!
