Brookside Field of Honour

Brookside Field of Honour is one of the largest and oldest Military interment sites in Canada. It is located next to Omands creek in Brookside Cemetery at the North area of the cemetery and runs parallel to Omand's Creek.
Considered Canada’s most significantly designed Military Field of Honour, Brookside has more than 12,000 Veterans, Service Men and Service Women and War Heroes interred alongside each other, with all interments marked by the Military Grey Barrie granite upright monument, mounted in a beam.
The Field of Honour was opened in 1915 when The Daughters of the Empire, a charitable organization now known as IODE, requested that the City set aside a section of the cemetery for the interment of veterans returning from World War I.
The Brookside Field of Honour is home to the only Commonwealth War Graves Commission ‘Stone of Remembrance’ in Canada and many other important military monuments, including the Last Post Fund Columbaria -- the first of its kind in Canada.
Who can be interred in the Field of Honour?
The Veteran or Service Man or Woman is the one full interment (or cremated remains) allowed. They can be accompanied by one cremated remains – those of a spouse, child, sibling, parent or grandparent. In some cases, the full interment may be the spouse of the veteran, provided the veteran’s cremated remains and the spouse are interred at the same time.
Can I leave flowers, poppies, flags or a wreath in the Field of Honour?
Fresh cut or silk flowers may be left in a metal or invertible vase placed in the ground at the head of the interment site adjacent to the beam. Remember to remove or invert your vase during the winter months to avoid any risk of damage. Wreaths may be left for approximately ten days after an interment and during the winter months from November 1st until April 30th. Small paper flags may be inserted in the ground in the vase area during Remembrance Week in November of each year.
Nothing can be attached to the military monuments to ensure the Field of Honour remains a dignified place that shows equal respect to all those interred there.

The Last Post Fund is an organization that assists veterans financially with the cost of an interment, when certain criteria are met.
Perpetual maintenance of the Field of Honour is assured to all owners. We invest a percentage of the purchase price of all cemetery property in the Perpetual Maintenance Reserve Fund.
Note: Perpetual maintenance does not provide for the upkeep of the monuments or flat markers placed in the Field of Honour. Contact the Last Post Fund for assistance.
